The Fulcrum

In Chicago, part-time bookkeeper and burlesque dancer Camille discovers she’s pregnant with a child she doesn’t want. In Baltimore, brilliant virologist Jacob is being courted by a rich, and deeply sinister, patron. And in Verona, grumpy Father Antonio is beginning a great, secret journey. Again.

The history of humanity is a dance between life and death, creation and destruction. When the scales seem set towards annihilation, a balancer is born, bringing equilibrium and correcting the course.

The balancer is not born alone in the world. Since the beginning of humanity, each has been shepherded into the world by The Fulcrum. And now this ancient team – part human, part immortal – must look to the newest balancer: Camille’s unborn baby.

But this time all is not as it seems. As the harsh Chicago winter sets in, the players in this aeons-old game will be forced to make choices and fulfill destinies they never imagined possible.

Wow, wow, wow. I have just reluctantly read the last word of this book, hungrily even reading the acknowledgments, because I didn’t want it to be over. I am not sure why this book was not snapped up by the first publishing house to see it, because it’s a masterpiece. It has all my favourite elements … magic realism, profundity, soulfulness, real-ness, humour, sexiness (one of my favourite sex “scenes”, ever) and marvellous, mind-bending perspectives on the Big questions. And it is well assembled, well researched with characters unfolding in many-faceted richness as they develop and spiral inevitably towards each other and the book’s climax. Like the best stories, it inspires and reveals insights best shared via the vehicle of storytelling. I hope there is a sequel or series, and if not, whatever Tanya Meeson writes next, I want to read it! – Annwen, Goodreads

What an incredible and well-written adventure. Had such fun reading this. Many twists and turns and moments of revelation and surprise. A work of great imagination that is also clever and convincing – a believable version of reality I was quite entranced by. Great, well-developed, characters, and character development. A thoroughly enjoyable read. Kept on thinking how this would work so well as a movie or series. Will read it again in time, for sure. – Carolyn, Amazon

It’s not often I want to jump up and give a standing ovation when I finish a book! This one made me do that. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I started reading The Fulcrum and, I’ll admit, the opening chapter had me wondering if this was going to be too ‘far out to hold my attention. But, it did! The characters are rich and likable. The story is intriguing. Dare I say it has a mystical quality that I found strangely satisfying. Well done Tanya! – Doug, Amazon

Describe what this book is about? Love, death, rebirth, spirituality, suspense, evil and miracles are all covered, and more. The Fulcrum in an intense read, and an entirely original one. Spanning the ages, its characters range from a burlesque dancer who discovers she’s pregnant with a child who, unbeknown to her, is destined for greater than great things, to close friends, bad bad people… It took a chapter or two to get into, but once the plot started to reveal itself I was completely hooked and read into the dark hours. (With cramped fingers – it’s a 600-pager). The book is difficult to categorise, crossing genres, but it’s beautifully written. The characters are well-fleshed, the plot dense and delicious and intelligent. Five stars from me… I see it was self-published. Why it wasn’t snapped up by a publisher is quite beyond me. Looking forward to more from this author. – Judy, Goodreads

What an unexpected surprise. This novel was completely unpredictable. It did take me a chapter or two to really settle into it. So persevere. What an extraordinary tale though, fantasy novel set in our times. This equates for deliciousness supreme. And now I left wanting. What new book will hold my gaze as well as this one did! – Tass, Goodreads

I thoroughly enjoyed the story told and the way it was revealed, one layer at a time. The book is most definitely not easily defined into a specific genre, but as a multi-genre type thing it excels at what it does. Quite frequently there is a slight foreshadowing happening about what might be happening further on the book, and this pays off in spades every time regarding the continuity created. The characters in the story are very well fleshed out, giving a good indication of where they come from and what their motivations are. It was a joy and pleasure to read through the book and I would highly recommend this to anybody who enjoys Dean Koontz or Stephen King books. – Paul, Goodreads

I simply cannot do this book justice through a few words that make up a review. All I can say is that the storyline was simply magical and along the journey of reading and losing myself in this perfectly imagined tale I kept nodding to myself, saying – yes, of course this could be real. It makes absolute sense. Reality mixes with fantasy mixes with religion, but what makes it stand head and shoulders above others like it, is the immense amount of research that clearly went into delivering this tome. I was incredibly sad to reach the end and hope there is a part two currently taking shape in author Tanya Meeson’s imagination. In a nutshell – all the primary figures around the Messiah’s time – are brought to life in different human forms and at various times in history to save the world one more time. – Helen, Goodreads

It’s difficult to pigeon hole this story into a genre, but as an avid epic fantasy reader and a historical fantasy and magic realism fan, this one ticked all the boxes for me. Firstly it’s meaty and absorbing. Nothing annoys me more than when a book ends just as I start to feel invested in the characters and storyline. The Fulcrum doesn’t disappoint in this department. The first few chapters introduce many characters and at first I felt I might lose track, but they were so well developed and 3 dimensional that I very quickly felt a connection to them and they fell into place with ease in my mind. The reality inhabited by the characters is detailed and well built with a worldly sense of the gritty and real.

And then it really really starts to pull you in ….
I have always been fascinated by an alternative history narrative, this is that, and more. This is a fantastical re-telling of one of the oldest stories ever written, ripe with the complex issues of female roles and stereotyping, religion, history, the Christian church and the politics that goes with these.
This sounds super heavy, but it also manages to make you laugh and weep and fill you with suspense as the deeper conspiracies and characters fall into place. A book written with intelligence, humour, originality and imagination. A hugely satisfying and entertaining read. – Sherry, Amazon
